Der schwedische DJ und Produzent Avicii («Wake Me Up») ist im Alter von 28 Jahren gestorben. Tim Bergling, wie er mit bürgerlichem Namen hiess, sei am Freitag in Maskat, der Hauptstadt des Oman, tot gefunden worden, teilte seine Sprecherin Ebba Lindqvist mit.
«Die Familie ist am Boden zerstört, und wir bitten alle, ihr Bedürfnis nach Privatsphäre in dieser schwierigen Zeit zu respektieren.» Weitere Informationen werde es nicht geben.
Avicii hatte 2013 mit «Wake me Up» einen Sommerhit gelandet. Avicii galt als einer der erfolgreichsten Musikmixer der Elektropopbranche. Er arbeitete mit Chris Martin (Coldplay), Jon Bon Jovi, Robbie Williams und Madonna zusammen. Das britische «DJ Magazine» kürte ihn 2012 und 2013 zum drittbesten Discjockey. Auf der Top-100-Liste war er 2017 noch auf Platz 28.
2014 räumte Avicii zwei Trophäen beim wichtigsten deutschen Musikpreis Echo ab: für «Wake Me Up» als «Hit des Jahres», ausserdem gewann er in der Kategorie «Künstler Electronic Dance Music». Einige Monate später sagte er seine Tour wegen gesundheitlicher Probleme ab.
Mit grossem Bedauern reagierten seine Fans dann 2016 auf Aviciis Ankündigung, sich von der Bühne zurückziehen zu wollen. «Ich habe grosses Interesse für verschiedene Dinge, aber zu wenig Zeit, dem nachzugehen», hatte er damals erklärt. Dem Musikgeschäft blieb er jedoch erhalten.
Auf seiner Homepage ist ein früheres Statement zu lesen, in dem es heisst, er trete zwar nicht mehr live auf - aber: «Das Live-Ende bedeutete nie das Ende von Avicii oder meiner Musik. Stattdessen ging ich zurück zu dem Ort, an dem alles einen Sinn ergab - das Studio.»
Erst vor wenigen Tagen hatte er bei Facebook geschrieben, er fühle sich geehrt, für die Billboard Music Awards 2018 nominiert zu sein. Auf keinen Fall solle man die Show im Mai verpassen. Seit 1990 werden die Billboard Music Awards jährlich von dem gleichnamigen Fachmagazin verliehen, sie basieren grösstenteils auf Chartplatzierungen.
